The Problems with Pet Urine in Carpet

Pet urine in Carpet can cause permanent damage to carpet if left untreated for too long.

From time to time, pet cats and dogs can urinate on your home carpets – for a variety of reasons.

Once dried, urine typically has a pH of approximately 11.2. This highly alkaline pH is damaging to both the carpet fibre and the dye bonds. This will start to bleach the original colour out of the carpet fibres and leave you with pale patches where the pee was deposited.

Without getting too technical; there are also bacteria, enzymes, Uric acid, Urochrome (which gives urine it’s yellow colour) and other substances in the pet urine. The bacteria multiply rapidly and produce the typical ‘pee smell’, which can get worse in damp or humid weather due to the extra moisture in the air.
The Urochrome can stain the carpet a yellow or almost orange colour, and this can be very difficult to remove – especially in older stains.

All of this can be quite distressing – after all, your beloved pet has turned your home into a toilet!

Naturally, you will probably try to clean up after your pets yourself.

The problem is…the internet is generally full of bad advice and unfortunately, most home treatments or supermarket products either don’t work, or can even make the problem much worse.

We regularly encounter carpets that the owners have poured on vinegar, or scrubbed in Bicarb Soda or some other ‘remedy’ because the internet said so.

The chemistry in these, as well as many commercially available cleaning products can actually damage the carpet further. They can also make the job a lot more difficult for your Professional carpet cleaner.

And you almost certainly won’t have the proper equipment needed to flush and extract the dissolved urine from deep in the carpet underlay – where it always ends up.

Don’t take the risk, contact an experienced professional as soon as you notice the accident.

PPCS has extensive training in dealing with these specific issues.

We understand exactly how to locate, and neutralise the urine and then remove it ALL from the carpet.

We then do a normal carpet ‘Steam clean’ on the rest of the room to sanitise the carpet and remove any other soiling etc.

This is also where our Woolsafe certification is valuable, as we have a detailed knowledge of the characteristics of the Wool fibre and the safe and correct ways to get results without further harming the carpet.

Pre-Inspection and Preparation

We don’t generally give quotes over the phone. Our policy is to come to you and see exactly what you require. This ensures that we locate ALL the urine-affected areas and calculate a fair price based on the amount of work required. After doing a careful inspection of your carpets, you will be given a full report on the condition of your carpets including the necessary cleaning procedures needed and cost.

In preparation for the carpet cleaning, we will normally move small furniture such as chairs, emptied end tables and coffee tables. Unfortunately, we cannot move really heavy items. And due to liability concerns, we don’t move things like entertainment units with TV’s or desks with computers on them, or fragile items like China cabinets.

100% Satisfaction Guarantee

We are so confident of our high-quality service that we offer all our clients a 100% satisfaction guarantee. We will happily re-clean your carpet free of charge… If you are not totally satisfied with the service we have provided, within 3 days of completing the clean – any cleaning-related problems will appear inside this time.
For added peace of mind we have current comprehensive insurance policies and police clearances.
